It’s no secret that men like to look good and well-groomed. Learning how to straighten your beard can help.

Men often grow their beards for various reasons, such as being in style or covering up an apparent flaw. The issue with growing a beard is that people will always notice if you’re not taking care of it properly, leading to negative opinions regarding how curly your beard looks and the lack of maintenance.

Beard straightening is a personal decision, and it can be done at home with the right tools. It doesn’t take as much time as you might think to maintain your beard or mustache, but some men find that their facial hair starts to curl up after a few days of not touching it (me included).

Fortunately, there are some things you can do. First, let’s learn how to straighten your beard.

Why Are Some Beards Curly?

This is a question that has been around for a long time. Some men have curly beards, and others don’t because of the shape of their follicles.

Why are some beards curly

Symmetrical hair folliclesfor example, are less likely to curl than asymmetrical hair follicles. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to grow a straight beard if you have curly ones, but it does mean genetics play a significant role in the shape and size of your facial hair.

The dryness of your beard can also influence the curliness of your facial hair, as men who suffer from dry skin or dandruff often have itchy and flaky beards that are more curly. Not using the right shampoo or washing your beard too often can also stripe your skin from natural oils.

Not drinking enough water leads to dehydration, which can cause dry skin, split ends, and a lot of other problems. So if your beard tends to be more curly than you’re hoping it will be, consider adding lots of water to your diet as well as using some beard moisturizers.

As you can see, several things determine how straight or curly your beard is. So it’s not just one thing causing your brush to curl up, but rather a combination of factors you can control.

Should You Straighten Your Beard?

This is a common question because many guys reflect their beards on other men’s beards. I personally prefer my beard straighten because it looks tidier, more presentable, and stylish. However, not everyone agrees with me.

Some men would instead sport a natural look, while others prefer to keep their facial hair in line by straightening it. Some people say straightening your beard is terrible because of the heat, but that can be avoided with the right products and tools. Remember, everything is dangerous when done wrong.

I believe that any man should do whatever they want with their facial hair and never judge anyone for straightening or curling it. If you’re going to style your beard, straighten it. Otherwise, you don’t have to.

How To Straighten Your Beard?

Let me show you two easy ways on how to straighten your beard at home.

How To Straighten Your Beard With A Heated Brush?

A heated brush is a great way to straighten your beard because of the adjustable temperature. It keeps your follicles safe while giving them a straight look, whether you have curly or wavy facial hair.

The heat application shows instant results once you start brushing your beard. Heated brushes come with different heating levels, which increases their time depending on the temperature you choose.

The best part of using one is getting rid of frizz while styling your beard in a few minutes.

Step 1 – Ensure Your Beard Is Cleaned And Dry

It would be best if you always started by washing and drying your beard before grooming it. This will help your brush glide through your hair without getting matted up with dirt, oil, or food particles.

Step 2 – Add Some Oil Or Balm

Your heated brush tends to dry up your facial hair as well as remove its natural oils. A few drops of oil or balm will hydrate your beard and prevent any dryness from happening.

Step 3 – Set the Temperature Right

The most common mistake you can make when using a heated brush is setting the temperature too high. However, 185 degrees Celsius (385 degrees Fahrenheit) worked pretty well for me, so that can be a good start point for you.

Step 4 – Create Tension

When you apply heat in combination with tension to your beard, you can straighten your hair follicles. Hold your brush vertically while you comb along the section of hair. Don’t press too hard as it’s unnecessary and may make the heat damage or burn your skin/hair.

Step 5 – Brush It Downward

After creating tension, brush down your beard carefully and slowly. This will make sure you straighten all of your hair and get rid of any frizz created by the heat of the brush.

Step 6 – Style Your Beard

Add some beard balm to define and style your beard to your liking. You can use your hands or a comb for this task.

How To Straighten Your Beard With A Blow Dryer?

So, straightening your beard with a blow dryer is not my favorite option, but it can be a good choice if you don’t have a heated brush at home.

It is not my favorite option because it can cause damage to your beard if not used correctly. Also, you should never use the blow dryer too close to your face and beard.

study from 2011 says that hair dryers, when used 15 cm away from the scalp, could result in minor damage to the hair follicle.

Step 1 – Ensure Your Beard Is Cleaned And Damp

Wash and dry your beard with a towel before the blow dryer. This will help your brush glide through your hair without getting tangled up with dirt, oil, or food particles.

Step 2 – Add Some Oil Or Balm

The hairdryer tends to dry up your facial hair as well as remove its natural oils. However, a few drops of oil or balm will hydrate your beard and prevent any dryness from happening.

Step 3 – Set Your Blow Dryer To The Right Temperature

The most common mistake you can make is setting your blow dryer to the wrong temperature. You should always start by putting it in medium heat and adjust it accordingly.

Step 4 – Brush It Up And Outwards

With the help of a comb or brush, start brushing the hair in a twisting motion, going upwards and outwards. Don’t forget under your chin and mustache.

Step 5 – Brush Your Beard Down

After brushing up your beard, switch directions and brush it downwards to straighten your hair follicles. Make sure you do this slowly as well to keep from damaging your facial fuzz.

Step 6 – Style Your Beard

Add some beard oil or balm to define and style your beard in place with a comb or hands.

How To Keep Your Beard Straight?

Now that you have straightened your beard, you need to keep it that way.

How To Straighten Beard

Use Beard Oil And Balm

Both beard oil and balm can help maintain your beard straighten. They both hydrate and soften your hair follicles. You can read about the difference between beard balm and oil and how to apply them.

Beard oil is a great option to hydrate the skin underneath your beard and prevent dryness that can lead to a curly beard. Beard balm is better for longer beards. It also helps define your facial fuzz and style it as you want.

These two products are essential to keep your beard straightened and hydrated since repeated straightening can cause damage to your hair (only if you don’t take proper care of your facial fuzz).

Use Seal Salt Spray

Sea salt spray is usually used on head hair to add a gritty texture but also extra thickness. You can add the same benefits to your beard.

Sea salt also helps to remove the excess oil buildup, allowing hair to be lighter and help with texturizing.

Be careful if you have a curly beard because sea salt can enhance your beard to be curly (due to the magnesium chloride) if you want it. I would advise you to do the next step to prevent your curly hair from reemerging.

Use A Beard Brush

It would be best if you brushed your beard at least once per day to keep it nice and straight.

A beard brush can remove the dead skin cells and dirt that can build up in your facial fuzz. It’s also an excellent tool to distribute and evenly apply beard oil and balm to your beard.

Combing your beard is another excellent way of keeping it straightened, just like with head hair.
