NEXT is one of the world’s oldest and most famous fast fashion brands, founded in England in 1864. Does that mean NEXT manufactures in England? Where are NEXT clothes made?

To confirm, I have decided to review hundreds of product descriptions on the NEXT website to verify if the brand lists where the products are made. I also visited two NEXT stores (London and Peterborough), checking the label of multiple items. So let’s find out where NEXT clothes are manufactured.

Where Are NEXT Clothes Made?

NEXT clothes are manufactured in China, Bangladesh, India, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Cambodia, Myanmar, Great Britain, Vietnam, Portugal, Albania, Brazil, Bulgaria, Italy, Indonesia, Laos, Lithuania, Madagascar, Mauritius, Moldova, Morocco, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Thailand, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Where Are Next Clothes Made

NEXT doesn’t list where its products are manufactured on the product descriptions on its website. It doesn’t come as a surprise since other fast fashion retail brands like H&M, Hollister, Uniqlo, Superdry, and Jack Wills do exactly the same. Zara is the only mass-market label I can recall that states on its website where its products are manufactured.

However, on the NEXT PLC website (the corporate website of the brand), you can check which countries the brand manufactures in. NEXT states this “We sourced NEXT brand products from 41 countries during 2021/22, with 10 countries producing 97% of our products (by contracted units).” These countries are:

Bangladesh – 32%
China – 25%
Turkey – 9%
India – 9%
Sri Lanka – 7%
Pakistan – 4%
Cambodia – 3%
Myanmar – 3%
Great Britain – 3%
Vietnam – 2%

When checking NEXT products in-store, I was surprised that China was not the number one manufacturer for the English label. Bangladesh was indeed the country I found the most on NEXT labels, matching the information provided on the brand’s website that most clothes are made in Bangladesh. In store, I found all ten countries responsible for 97% of NEXT production, plus Portugal.

NEXT splits its manufacturing into three different tiers:

Tier 1 – Factories declared by NEXT suppliers and where NEXT’s supply agreement is assigned, and bulk production takes place.
Tier 2 – Subcontractors of a Tier 1 factory responsible for labels, packing, components, and trims like buttons, zips, and processing embroidery or laundry unit.
Tier 3 – Fabric and materials suppliers that are used by Tier 1.

Just to let you know that in the Tier 1 list, you will find that NEXT also manufactures in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Estonia, Egypt, Slovenia, and Taiwan. These countries exclusively manufacture home products for NEXT.

Also, if you purchase online, you can check the country of origin when you receive the goods. This is because the EU and US legislations require the brands to tell the country of origin for any imported products regarding physical goods.

Are NEXT Clothes Made In The UK?

Some NEXT clothes are manufactured in England. Rutland, Hinckley, London, Witney, and Bishop’s Stortford are the cities where NEXT manufactures some of its clothes. Some NEXT home products are made in Oldham, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Weston, and Southampton.

In-store I didn’t find any NEXT products manufactured in England. Even if NEXT is an English label, I have to say that I was surprised to find out that the brand manufactures in England. This is because England’s manufacturing costs are much higher than in Asian countries. However, we both must remember that NEXT production in England is only 3%.

Are NEXT Clothes Made In China?

Yes, many NEXT clothes, accessories, footwear, and home products are manufactured in China.

Are Next Clothes Made In China

NEXT production happens in over 700 factories in China. Most of them are independent contractors that the brand works with when needing it. Guangdong, Hunan, Shandong, Nantong, and Zhejiang are some of the cities in China where NEXT manufactures the most.

Brand brands like NEXT select China because they can boost their profit margins. Cheap wages, materials, and facilities are why brands like to manufacture their products in China. I was expecting a bigger dominance of China as the leading manufacturer of NEXT. Still, it’s good to see that NEXT is less dependent on China and has more manufacturing options.

Are NEXT Clothes Made In Bangladesh?

Yes, many NEXT clothes are manufactured in Bangladesh.

Are Next Clothes Made In Bangladesh

As I said before, I was surprised to see so many NEXT clothes manufactured in Bangladesh. I was expecting to find many items made in Bangladesh, but not for the country to be the number one manufacturer. Gazipur, and Dhaka, seem to be the two main cities when it comes to manufacturing NEXT apparel in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is an excellent country for mass-recycling and fast fashion manufacturing, attracting more brands to produce their products there. This could be a reason why NEXT is manufacturing so much in Bangladesh since the company is making an effort to reduce the environmental impact of its business operations.

Conclusion

Where are NEXT clothes made? Mostly in Bangladesh and China. You can also expect to find some other countries like Turkey, India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Pakistan, Myanmar, Great Britain, and Vietnam. You can also find some other countries that manufacture NEXT clothes and home products on a small scale.

NEXT clothes are affordable and appeal to younger and older shoppers. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for casual wear or want something more formal. NEXT has different types of clothes for everyone.
