Burberry is a British luxury fashion brand and one of the most popular in the world. With well-crafted items and high-quality products, where is Burberry made, you ask?

Burberry opened its first store in 1856 and has its headquarters in London. Does that mean Burberry is manufactured in the UK or outsourced to cheap countries in Asia to keep the global demand and the competitiveness of the luxury market?

I have checked hundreds of product descriptions on Burberry’s website to verify if the brand lists where the products are made and researched a lot online to bring these conclusions to you in this article. Let’s find out where Burberry is made. You can also check out the best French and American luxury fashion brands.

Where Is Burberry Made?

Burberry is made in different countries, with most of its products manufactured in Italy and then China presumably (since Burberry put imported and not the country where some products are made). However, you also can expect products made in England, Scotland, Spain, France, Germany, and even Monaco and Korea.

Burberry where is it made

I was shocked when I realized that Burberry barely produces anything in the UK apart from three products (I couldn’t find any other on its website).

To make it easy for you, this is what I have found in my research of hundreds of different Burberry products for men and women:

Made In England – Trench coat and gabardines.
Made In Scotland – Classic cashmere scarf.
Made In Italy – Most items are made in Italy, like men’s and womenswear (at least the most expensive), bags, hats, belts, footwear, scarves, makeup, and jewelry.
Made In China – The “cheapest” men’s and womenswear, and some footwear items.
Made In Spain – Perfumes and some sandals.
Made In France – Perfumes and some makeup.
Made In Germany – Perfumes
Made In Monaco – One perfume I found.
Made In Korea – One makeup item I found.

I didn’t check every single item, but I am happy with the hundreds I reviewed, so I probably missed some on the list. Maybe I missed some countries.

Is Burberry Made In The UK?

Yes, some Burberry items are manufactured in the UK, like the extremely popular trench coat. The brand tries to pass its charm of British appeal made, but most of its items are produced outside of the UK. Superdry is another English fashion label that manufactures outside of the UK.

Currently, Burberry has two warehouses in Yorkshire, UK. One in Keighley, where the Burberry gabardines are made, and another in Castleford, where the Heritage trench coats are produced. Add the Classic Cashmere Scarf made in Scotland, and I couldn’t find any other Burberry products made in the UK.

Is Burberry Made In The UK

Burberry was producing a lot more in the UK but in 2007 closed a factory in Treorchy, South Wales, leaving 300 employees without a job. The same happened in 2009 when the brand closed a sewing facility in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, and axed 290 jobs.

Why did Burberry close these facilities? The brand said it wasn’t commercially viable to keep both facilities since it planned to move to cheaper labor countries in Asia and South America. In these countries, brands can get cheaper materials, pay lower salaries and grow their profits.

So as you can see, some Burberry items are still manufactured in the UK, but not all of them. You can check the label of any Burberry item and see if you have the “Made In The UK.

Is Burberry Made In Italy

Many Burberry items on their website have in the product description “Made in Italy”, especially when accessories like belts, bags, hats, and scarves (except the Classic Cashmere Scarf) are exclusively made in Italy. You also have many clothes made in the Italian country, and the brand seems proud to list Italy as a major manufacturer.

Websites like Mr. Porter, Harrods, or Selfridges sell Blueberry but seem very inconsistent, answering the question, where is Burberry made? When a product is made in Italy, they list the country on the product description. However, some products don’t have any information about where they were made. I guess you have to wait till you receive the items to check if they were manufactured in China or Thailand.

Is Burberry Made In China

I want you to think with me. Burberry lists on its website all the countries where the products are made. So we have Italy, France, Spain, England, Scotland, Germany, and Korea. We also have a lot of “Imported,” and we know the brand has factories in China.

Now, this is only my opinion, and I do not have proof for what I am writing, but I think “Imported” means made in China. Of course, you will now know what “Imported” means till you receive the item since the US legislation requires a clear country of origin for imported products. Since the first of April 2020, indicating a country of origin or place of provenance is mandatory under EU rules.

It further seems that Blueberry (like any other luxury brand) wants to hide from its customers that some of its products are made in China. At least in the digital world, where no one seems to write made in China. But, as we know, it’s a different story regarding physical products since, by law, you need to have the country of origin on the product’s label.

Some evidence that Burberry is made in China was withheld when the British luxury brand withdrew production of some of its handbags from a factory in China’s Guangdong province in 2012 because it wasn’t sure it was adhering to Burberry’s ethical guidelines.

Is Burberry Made In China Original?

Yes, all Burberry items with the label “made in China” purchased on Burberry’s website or reputable stores are authentic. Also, the fabric should not have any pulls or rips in it.

Conclusion

Maybe you decided to look at where Burberry is made because you were curious or wanted to know if you bought an authentic Burberry piece. Discovering where your favorite brand is made can change your perception of the brand.

I am not naive. I knew luxury brands manufacture many products in Asia, and Burberry wouldn’t be an exception. The biggest surprise is to know that most of Burberry’s products are made in Italy and not in the UK. The understanding that I have is that Burberry barely produces anything in its own country. The company likes to create the idea “it British made,” but it couldn’t be further from the truth.
