Hermès is one of the world’s most desirable and known luxury brands. Every woman and some men desire to have a Birkin bag. However, the question you have is: where is Hermès made?

Now, I never acquired a Hermès product because it’s too expensive for me, but I have tried some goods from this ultra-luxury French label in-store. It was a massive challenge to take pictures of Hermès labels, but eventually, I was successful.

To confirm, I have decided to review hundreds of product descriptions on the Hermès website to verify if the brand lists where the products are made. I also visited the Hermès store in New Bond Street London and their department stores in Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, and Harrods, checking multiple items. So let’s find out where Hermès products are made.

Where Is Hermès Made?

Hermès is mainly manufactured in France, followed by Italy. The French luxury brand also manufactures in Switzerland, the UK, the USA, Vietnam, Australia, India, Germany, Indonesia, Scotland, Vietnam, Nepal, Ecuador, and Madagascar.

Where Is Hermes Made

Hermès lists the country of origin of most products on its website. I expected the French label to state the country of origin on every product description, like Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Dior, Saint Laurent, and Givenchy. Especially considering the two countries where Hermès manufactures the most.

I am unsure why Hermès doesn’t state every country in the product description. Usually, that means that the brand is manufactured in China. Burberry does precisely that, displaying all countries, but when it comes to China, we have “imported.” Louis Vuitton also misses the country of origin of some products, but the brand doesn’t manufacture in China. I believe Hermès is in the same box as Louis Vuitton on this one.

The French luxury label states on its responsible and sustainable development page that it has production sites around France, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, the USA, Australia, and Vietnam. As you know, I have found a lot more countries than only these, which makes me think that Hermès also works with independent contractors for particular items.

I predicted that when checking the Hermès website, I would only find products made in Italy and France, the only two countries I have found when checking Hermès product labels in-store. I was wrong, but France and Italy are still the leading manufacturers of Hermès, and I believe over 90% of its products are made in both countries.

Even if Hermès doesn’t have the product’s country of origin on its website’s product description, you could check where the item was manufactured by inspecting its physical label. This is because the EU and US legislation require brands to indicate the country of origin of any goods (well, Lacoste and Barbour seem to fail on this one)

Is Hermès Made In France?

Yes, Hermès manufactures all of its bags and most of its ready-to-wear collections and accessories in France.

Is Hermes Made In France

Hermès currently has 51 workshops in France and intends to open more in the following years to face the demand the brand is facing from consumers. Artisans spend 18 months learning the craft and spend eight years working towards the title of the master artisan.

Just for you to understand the manufacturing process of Hermès in France, a Kelly bag requires 36 pieces of leather, many metal parts, and between 15 to 20 hours for one artisan to complete. Just that alone justifies why Hermès bags are so expensive.

The made-in-France reputation in fashion is well-established worldwide, and people perceive products manufactured in France as excellent quality. The fact that Hermès manufactures many of its products in France justifies the high prices of the label. When you combine image, status, and concern for detail when manufacturing any item, you have the key to success, and Hermès knows that.

Is Hermès Made In Italy?

Yes, Hermès manufactures all of its shoes and some of its ready-to-wear collections and accessories in Italy.

Is Hermes Made In Italy

I couldn’t find precisely in Italy Hermès manufactures its products, but the French label owns a tannery in Cuneo that specializes in exotic leathers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hermès opened more production sites in Italy since the country is well known for its quality and excellent craftsmanship.

Hermès production manager Guillaume de Seynes said, “We look for excellence where it exists. Italy has been able to preserve an exceptional production chain for footwear, which we no longer have in France. And so, we manufacture all our shoes in Italy.”

Most luxury labels like to manufacture in Italy because the finest materials are used, and experienced artisans are very proud of their work. As a result, workers tend to be highly devoted to each item’s manufacturing phases. This is why products made in Italy are usually immaculate because every detail matters.

For many consumers, the mere fact that a product says “Made In Italy” is enough to justify any price. People want to pay for the best, so they have no problems paying thousands of dollars for Hermès products made in Italy. They know they are purchasing style, quality, and durability.

Is Hermès Made In China?

As far as I know, no Hermès products are manufactured in China.

It’s pretty rare to see luxury brands manufacturing in China. However, Burberry and Balenciaga are here to prove us wrong since they heavily manufacture in China, but also in Italy.

Hermès has maintained its popularity and desirability, knowing consumers expect the best products. By being conscientious of its image and reputation, Hermès has gained the trust of its consumers and knows they will pay any price for an item from the brand.

If you think about it, manufacturing in China would be beneficial for Hermès since it would slash manufacturing costs and improve the brand’s profits. However, that could decrease the quality of its products, and Hermès doesn’t want to gamble on its reputation.

China is ideal for brands that want to mass-manufacture products for a lower price. For example, Hermès only produces certain items until it hits its sales targets, so sometimes it only needs a small amount.
